A complete oral exam, sometimes known as a comprehensive oral evaluation, is a thorough diagnostic assessment of your oral and overall health. New patients visiting Concord Woods Dental Group for the first time must undergo a comprehensive oral examination. This assessment allows our dentist to create a baseline of your dental and general health.

Depending on the outcome of the exam, our dentist may recommend restorative treatments. When a patient is in excellent dental and overall health, our dentist will get you started on preventive dental procedures so you can maintain your beautiful, healthy smile.

For returning patients, complete oral exams are performed every three to five years, depending on the needs of the patient.

What to Expect During a Complete Oral Exam

During a complete oral exam, our dentist will be keen to understand certain aspects of your oral health. As such, these evaluations will be conducted:

  • Examination of diagnostic dental x-rays
  • Periodontal disease evaluation
  • Screening for cavities
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Occlusal/bite analysis
  • Examination of existing restorations, including fillings, crowns, dentures, etc.
  • Before starting a full mouth reconstruction, our dentist performs a complete oral exam to determine the extent of your dental health challenges.

Our dentist will also ask you about your medical history. Remember to mention any chronic health problems that you may have. If you’re on any long-term medication to manage specific health conditions, let our dentist know of the same.

A complete oral exam usually lasts about an hour. For some patients, the duration may fall on either side of this average time.

Why Are Complete Oral Exams Important?

Most dental problems can be easily treated using non-invasive measures, but only if they’re detected while still in their early stages. During a complete oral exam, our dentist checks for early signs of dental issues, including those that aren’t symptomatic yet. Even if your teeth seem fine on the surface, there might be underlying issues that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. Our dentist is trained to detect such problems.

For those patients without dental problems, complete oral exams provide the additional assurance that you need. If your teeth are in good shape, we will get you started on preventive dental procedures such as dental cleanings and fluoride treatments. This way, you can keep your beautiful, bright, and healthy smile for a lifetime.
